i.

Between May and October 1917, our Lady appeared six times to Lucia, Francisco & Jacinta in Fatima, Portugal. The children were shepherds who would pray the Rosary together. The first apparition took place on Sunday, May 13th, 1917 when a brilliant flash of lightning attracted the children. A beautiful Lady appeared clothed in white who prayed the Rosary with them. She requested the children to return on the thirteenth of each month. Over time, Mary asked the children to pray the Rosary daily for the conversion of sinners and asked for devotion to her Immaculate Heart. She requested prayer, penance and the consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart. She also requested that the first Saturday of each month be observed by going to confession and receiving Holy Communion to make reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
On the day of the final apparition, October 13th, 1917, she identified herself as "Our Lady of the Rosary" and the dramatic episode of the dance of the sun occurred and was witnessed by a crowd of 70,000 people.
Pope John Paul II offered Mass at Fatima on May 13th, 1982 in thanksgiving for Mary's protection in saving his life the previous year. He stated "the message of Fatima is a call to conversion and repentance, the nucleus of the message of the Gospel". The Pope re-consecrated the world to Mary's Immaculate Heart and called all to pray especially the Rosary.
